Optical Core in an LED LCoS system

LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) is a reflective display technology often used in projectors and near-eye displays because of its high resolution and ability to create smooth images.

In an LED LCOS system, the "optical core" refers to the combination of components that guide and shape light from the LED light source to the LCOS panel and then to the viewer's eye (or projection surface).

In essence, the "optical core" in an LED LCOS system is the precisely engineered pathway that light follows from the LED source, through the polarization and modulation stages, and finally to the output.

Optical Core Components

Here's a breakdown of the key elements that would typically be part of the optical core:

  1. LED Illumination System: This includes the LEDs themselves, which might be arranged in an array or with a specific color configuration (e.g., RGB LEDs). It also includes any optics that help to collimate and homogenize the light from the LEDs, ensuring even illumination of the LCOS panel.

  2. Polarizing Beam Splitter (PBS): LCOS panels work by modulating the polarization of light. A PBS is crucial for separating the incoming and outgoing light beams. It allows the light from the LED to pass through and illuminate the LCOS panel, and then reflects the modulated light from the panel towards the projection lens or eyepiece.

  3. LCOS Panel: This is the heart of the display, where the liquid crystal layer modulates the polarization of light to create the image. The "optical core" here could refer to the specific design and properties of the LCOS panel itself, including the pixel structure, liquid crystal material, and alignment layers.

  4. Projection Lens (or Eyepiece): This lens system magnifies and focuses the image from the LCOS panel onto the screen or into the viewer's eye. The design and quality of this lens are critical for image sharpness, clarity, and brightness.

  5. Optional Color Management: If the system uses a single LCOS panel for color, it will likely include color filters or a color wheel to sequentially display red, green, and blue components of the image. These components would also be part of the optical core.
