Product Design

At Notch Optics, we design, develop, and fabricate a wide variety of products for industries including aerospace, medical, and scientific fields. Our team utilizes SolidWorks CAD software for mechanical design and ANSYS FEA for structural analysis, ensuring precision and reliability in our designs.

Opto-mechanical Engineering Expertise

Opto-mechanical engineering is a specialized field that focuses on the design of mechanical components, structures, and mechanisms for optical systems. These components are specifically crafted to support and secure optical elements while maintaining their performance integrity.

Optomechanical systems typically involve mounting refractive or reflective optics onto an "optical bench" that ensures precise alignment of the optical elements. Some systems feature fixed optics, while others require precision movement, such as focusing mechanisms or multi-axis gimbaled mirrors.

The key to high-performance optomechanical systems is a stable, athermal metering structure that maintains optical alignment despite environmental factors like temperature and vibration. Designing to micron and microradian tolerances is essential for precision, and at Notch Optics, we are passionate about achieving this level of accuracy.

Optomechanical Capabilities

Our expertise in optomechanical design and analysis includes:

  • Kinematic mounts
  • Bonded and athermalized optic mounts
  • Mechanical "zero distortion" mounts
  • Precision guided optics
  • Single and multi-element lens barrels and mounts
  • Multi-axis adjustable mounts (tip/tilt, roll/yaw, etc.)
  • Athermalized optical benches and metering structures
  • Optical alignment and assembly tooling
  • Optical surface stress and distortion analysis
  • Zernike polynomial surface fits for residual RMS and P-V of stressed optics

Precision Motion Systems

For applications requiring precision movement, we prefer flexure-based systems over bearing-guided ones, as flexures offer frictionless, stictionless motion with an infinite lifespan. Examples of motion systems we’ve designed include:

  • 3-axis gimbals
  • Linear focus mechanisms
  • Scan mirrors

Optical Engineering

Notch Optics also provides optical engineering design and analysis or collaborates with existing optical designs. Our optical engineering capabilities include:

  • Design of reflective and refractive optical systems
  • Athermalized optical system design
  • Importing existing optical design files into SolidWorks for seamless integration
