X-Cubes

x-cube working principle

What are x-cubes?

X-cubes, also known as "dichroic cubes", "X-prisms", or "color separation cubes," are optical components used to split a beam of white light into its primary color components: red, green, and blue (RGB).

They are commonly used in projection systems, digital imaging, and color display technologies to create or manipulate full-color images by controlling these primary colors.

X-Cube (RGB Prism) designed for reflective LCOS Projector, matrix camera applications, and is well-suited to fast lenses imaging onto three CCD/CMOS sensors.

Structure and Function

  • Design: An X-cube typically consists of four triangular prisms that are glued together to form a cubic shape. Each interface of the prisms is coated with dichroic filters that selectively reflect or transmit specific wavelengths of light.
  • Color Separation: The dichroic filters inside the X-cube allow it to separate incoming white light into the RGB components. Each filter is designed to reflect one color and transmit the others, effectively splitting the light into different color channels.
  • Color Combination: In some cases, X-cubes can also be used in reverse to combine light from different RGB sources into a single white light beam.

Key Characteristics

  1. Efficient Color Management: X-cubes provide highly efficient separation of light into its RGB components, which is essential for producing bright and accurate color displays.
  2. Precision Coatings: The filters inside the X-cube are precision-engineered to have specific wavelength properties that ensure accurate color separation with minimal overlap or color distortion.
  3. Compact Design: The cubic shape makes them compact and easy to integrate into optical systems, making them ideal for use in devices where space is limited.
  4. Used under any polarization state
  5. High brightness
  6. Excellent White balance
  7. Different coating, different size are available
  8. High contrast 1000:1

Applications

  • Projectors: X-cubes are commonly used in digital projectors to split the light source into RGB channels, which are then modulated and recombined to project full-color images.
  • Cameras and Imaging Systems: They are used in cameras to direct different wavelengths of light to different sensors, improving color accuracy and image quality.
  • Display Technologies: In LCD and DLP displays, X-cubes help in managing the light to produce vibrant and true-to-life colors.
  • Scientific Instruments: They are also used in various scientific and analytical instruments where precise color separation is necessary for accurate measurements.

X-cubes are essential components in optical systems that rely on the precise control of color, enabling high-quality image reproduction and accurate color rendering in a wide range of applications.
